Chapter 16: Sarah Wood

I pull myself out of bed at the smell of bacon with something wet rubbing up against my face. I open my eyes to see Rex licking my face. I push him aside. “It’s good to see you too boy.”

I missed Rex. Such a loyal golden retriever. God, he’s getting old. The hair around his face has become white, and his breath stinks.

I can’t help but feel the weight of the world pushing down on me as I pull myself together. I head downstairs with Rex on my heels to find my dad cooking up a storm in the kitchen while Brandon and Harrison play video games in the living room.

“Look who’s finally up,” Brandon shouts over the sound of the t.v. “Get your beauty sleep, princess?”

“Oh shut up,” I grumble as I walk into the kitchen and greet my dad. I lean up and peck him on the cheek while he flips an egg. “Good morning, dad.”

“Good morning, sweetie. How is school going?” he asks.

“Great, basketball is going well. We’re still undefeated,” I smile.

“That’s because basketball season hasn’t even started yet!” Brandon shouts again from the living room.

“Hush,” I snap back.

“I’m sure you girls will do great this season. Are you getting along with your teammates?” Dad ignores Brandon’s jibes and continues to find out how I'm doing.

“Yeah, I’ve actually become friends with most of them. We get a big sis and mine’s pretty cool. Caitlyn Foster who was one of the top scorers last year,” I explain.

“That’s great,” he says as he dishes up our plates. I neglect to mention Marcela.

As dad finishes cooking breakfast, Brandon and Harrison hustle over to the table, pushing and shoving each other as I join them. “So, boys, how is MSU?” my dad asks.

“Great, teams going great. Everything's just great,” Brandon says, sarcastically as he stuffs his mouth with bacon.

“Oh, Brandon’s just upset he won't be starting.” Harrison rolls his eyes at his brother’s whining.

“Shut up. It’s not like you’ll see any playing time this year,” he snaps back.

“I’m a freshman, of course, I won’t. I’ve already accepted that,” Harrison acknowledges.

“Brandon, why are you even worried? You’re still only a sophomore?” I question as I pick at my breakfast.

“I know that—I just, I’m so much better than Jamal. I could dribble circles around him, and yet he’s starting over me?” He clearly isn’t handling the situation well.

“You’re sounding like a big old baby,” I argue. “I definitely won’t be starting next year, not with Cat only being a junior, and I’ve accepted that.” We’ve played basketball for years, and it’s the same every time. I can’t believe he thinks college would be any different.

“Well, it’s different with me. No offense, but you’re a girl, and girls teams are different. No one really cares who’s starting, it’s just all fun and games,” Brandon declares.

“Ouch,” Harrison says.

“You’re such an ass!” I snarl.

“Well, it’s true,” Brandon insists.

“Now, now,” my dad interrupts. “That’s not true. Sarah and her teammates work really hard. And Sarah, that’s a dollar in the swear jar.
